Reasons Why Al-Mustapha Visited Asari Dokubo

You may have heard that that Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to ex-Head of State, General Sani Abach paid a visit to ex-Niger Delta warlord, Asari Dokubo in his home. What you probably do not know is what could possibly be the connect between Al-Mustapha and Asari Dokubo.

The reason for this may not be unconnected with the fact that when Al-Mustapha held sway as one of the most powerful men in Nigeria during the reign of late General Sani Abacha, Asari Dokubo was more or less an unknown figure; and when Dokubo and his foot soldiers held Nigeria to ransom, Al-Mustapha was in jail.

The connect however is that when Al-Mustapha was sentenced to death by a federal high court in Lagos, many spoke against the sentence, citing deliberate percussion on the person of Al-Mustapha.

One of the very few persons who spoke openly against the death sentence on Al-Mustapha was Alhaji Asari Dokubo. In fact, Asari described the judgment as an attempt to turn the North against his kinsman, President Goodluck Jonathan. Dokubo’s believe was that if Al-Mustapha was hanged during Jonathan’s administration it will be “impossible” for Jonathan to get any support from the North in 2015.

Now that Al-Mustapha successfully made it out of the prison, he probably must have been told that one of the persons who were in his support was Asari Dokubo, thus the need for the visit.

Beyond this though, one cannot rule out the politics of 2015 in the visit, especially considering the alleged plan by President Goodluck Jonathan to use Al-Mustapha to gain some inroads into the North.
