APC Leaders to Visit Obasanjo, Shagari, Ekwueme, Danjuma, Others

The nationwide consultations embarked upon by the leaders of the All Progressive Congress (APC) is billed continue today with a possible visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo today at his Hilltop mansion in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

The opposition leaders who had visited former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida and former head of state, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, are said to be consulting with elder statesmen on the state of the nation, introduce the party to them and solicit their support.

Apart from Obasanjo, other former leaders and stakeholders the APC leaders have penciled down to visit include former President Shehu Shagari, former Vice-Presidents Alex Ekwueme and Atiku Abubakar; former Defence Minister, Theophilus Danjuma, former Minister of Finance, Mallam Adamu Ciroma, and Alabo Graham-Douglas, among other stakeholders.

According to an APC source, Obasanjo was meant to have been the first person visited by the APC leaders, but the meeting with him had to be rescheduled because he had to travel to Hong Kong, but promised to reschedule when he got back from the trip.

“Considering his place in the polity, there was no way we would have ignored former President Obasanjo and indeed, he was the first we had wanted to see except that he had to travel abroad – I think Hong Kong – and promised to meet with us as soon as he got back,” the source said.

But in order to keep the momentum, the source said the leadership of the APC decided to visit other leaders like IBB and Abdusalami, who were in the country.

The source stated that party’s consultations transcended partisan politics, but was one designed in the larger interest of Nigerians and the need to rescue Nigeria from the precipice, hence the wide-ranging consultations across parties and faiths. “It does not matter whether or not you’re supporting President Goodluck Jonathan, once you’re a stakeholder, we’re meeting with you to discuss the future of the country,” the APC source said, optimistic that their engagements would yield positive results.
