The Good, The Bad and The Nigerian – Yemi Olutoye
It is funny how we want our problem fixed but don’t want to be part of the solution. The easiest job there is on planet Earth is Finger Pointing (especially if you have a 50 followers on Twitter); we see everything wrong with the Policeman, we see everything wrong with the Politician and when asked for the way forward… we go speechless; muttering something about a government coming to our aid. Everyone is a critic in their own mind; always giving one clueless suggestion or the other. What do you want to do with the man who feels Nigeria can only get better when we are done killing all our Past leaders and Politicians? I don’t know too… maybe we should get him a Gun.
It is good to play “Doubting Thomas” atimes…I won’t believe it if someone told me that there are still Nigerians out there who believes the whole Chibok Saga is a lie; even after it reached its 100th day milestone… Or the ones at the conference, whose biggest idea for a 53 year old country is changing the National anthem as the current one is the reason why we have not been moving forward. Yea, believe it or not, God created humans… You just have to look at some, shake your head and walk away. Most times, a reply is not worth it.
It all boils down to the everyman for himself mentality; “if it doesn’t concern me, then it is none of my business.” That’s how we live in this country. You know that saying, if you don’t help your neighbor put out the fire on his roof; sooner or later, your roof will also catch fire. That’s what will happen if we all continue to live like this. The other day when I was part of those who spearheaded a solidarity walk for the Chibok girls in a Nigerian university, some just laughed it off. And they were like, are they your sisters? I apologize but it really would have concerned everybody if every one of our girls were kidnapped. Then, #BringBackOurGirls might just have lasted 24hours.
A united Nigeria is what we clamor for, where every man won’t be for his pocket alone. We need to start caring about others even when we are not affected. The tables are turning o.
