Open Letter to Deji Adeyanju, PDP’s Director of New Media, By Dipo Awojide

As Director of New Media for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), I understand that you are a busy man. I also understand that you may have been tasked with trending the next hashtag against the APC and President Buhari. For the reasons mentioned, I am going to keep this piece very short.

Can we please move on from the derogatory hashtags, campaigns of hate and daily abuse on Nigerian political twitter? Can we please stop the pointless arguments and fruitless political conversations? Can we start focusing on the real issues affecting Nigeria and all Nigerian citizens?

I would rather you, your co-travellers and the rest of us focus on issues related to the economy, education, employment, national power supply, healthcare, industrialisation and youth development.
Henceforth, let us keep it clean, sane and professional, in the interest of all Nigerians, especially those who follow political conversations on social media. There are loads of smart young Nigerians who want to join our political conversations. However, the low tone of engagement and the constant ‘noise’ has discouraged them to participate and keep their opinions to themselves. Some of these opinions may bring smarter ideas and new insight to the discussions currently at hand.

Mr Deji Adeyanju, I thoroughly hope you will consider the thoughts expressed in this open letter. The time for change is now. Let us move on from the past and engage in some productive debate that will promote better prospects for our nation and its people.

God bless you, God bless President Buhari and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Kind regards,
Dr Dipo Awojide
