Nigeria is now in a state of anomy by Ayodele Kusamotu

On 22 July 2018 unknown gunmen blocked the Kaduna-Abuja road in Gidan Busa village, they shot sporadically at any vehicle in sight and in the process killed an army officer, his daughter, policemen and other defenceless Nigerians. Others Nigerians were abducted as these bandits wrecked havoc for over an hour without hinderance before fleeing. This is a typical day in the life of the Nigerian. Nigerians are defencelessand the country is now in  a state of anomy.

Many things are happening nationally and politically. The politicians know the game better than the other Nigerians, they can defend and deal with themselves. But Nigeria is now a country where injustice is the order of the day and the norm. This should worry us even more from a selfish perspective. The fact that no one is immune from these happenings.

Our elected representatives need not wait till there is an irreversible collapse that will turn our country into another failed State. Nigeria is in crisis , something needs to be done immediately. I have felt uncomfortable with the characteristic of the people in power after studying their reaction and indifference to the plight of the common man. But I never thought that things would get this bad.

The security architecture of the country has remained firmly in the same hands yet insecurity pervades in the country. In most nations, changes would be expected and a musical chair, reshuffle or rejig would happen. This has not happened in Nigeria. Coming to the rule of law, it has now being turned upside down as the Government which is charged with protecting it through the law enforcement agencies has proved itself above the law by incorrigibly disobeying court orders.

Nigerians also have lost confidence in the judiciary which was hitherto the last bastion of hope for the common man. I have read unfortunate briefs by rogue lawyers justifying delays of justice by the judiciary. Democracy too has been turned on its head. Never in history have we seen the  three arms of government at war amongst themselves. The Executive is at war with the Legislature and Judiciary whilst all the three arms of government are at war with Nigerians. The same government that preaches against corruption harbours the most corrupt individuals in its government and even protects them from scrutiny.

There is however, light at the end of tunnel. The repair work must begin in February 2019 when Nigerians will again go the polls to either give a pass mark to the Government or show them the way out. The royal hourglass that measures the length of day and night churns with the last bit of blood stained sand draining through the transparent glass. The last candle is burning and the flame which provides light to the entire nation is hostage to the vagaries of the weather.

God save Nigeria. Amen.
